Day 1 — Sat, July 4 — Arrive Strokestown (Overnight: Strokestown)

Arrive in Strokestown and begin your journey at Strokestown Park and the National Famine Museum, one of Ireland’s most important heritage sites. Explore the beautifully preserved Manor House and stroll through the historic gardens before immersing yourself in the powerful exhibitions of the National Famine Museum.

The walk officially begins at the Glass Wall Trailhead at the entrance to the museum grounds, where the first pair of bronze shoes marks the starting point of the National Famine Way.

Next door is Beirne’s Heritage Pub, a much-loved local gathering spot.

Day 2 — Sun, July 5Strokestown → Cloondara20 km / 3–4 hrs (Overnight: Longford/Cloondara area)

Day 3 — Mon, July 6Cloondara → Ballymahon25 km / 4–5 hrs (Overnight: Ballymahon)

Enjoy long, lock-side stretches along the Royal Canal, passing pastoral farmland and rare bog landscapes. Keep watch for swans gliding on the water and herons standing motionless along the banks, adding a serene natural rhythm to the day.

As you approach Ballymahon Harbour, look out for the impressive stone ruins of the historic “Goods In” and “Goods Out” stores, once used to export grain grown in the surrounding countryside to England. Pause at the beautifully restored Harbour Ticket House, where many emigrants once purchased their passage tickets—an evocative reminder of what lay ahead for those who continued onward.

Continue along the canal through peaceful countryside, enjoying quiet towpaths and wide skies. The pace today allows time for reflection and appreciation of the canal’s enduring role in Ireland’s social and economic history.

Arriving in Ballynacarrigy, discover a tranquil village closely tied to canal trade of centuries past. Look out for the abandoned Canal Hotel and historic weighbridge at the harbour—silent witnesses to a once-busy waterway. Enjoy a relaxed evening, perhaps with a pint in a traditional local pub.

Day 7 — Fri, July 10Hill of Down → Enfield20 km / 3–4 hrs (Overnight: Enfield)

Day 8 — Sat, July 11Enfield → Maynooth
20 km / 3–4 hrs (Overnight: Maynooth)

Approach the vibrant university town of Maynooth. Visit the historic college or wander along the marina before settling in for the night.

Savor the charm of this lively Irish town, where old-world architecture meets a youthful energy. Pause for a coffee in one of Maynooth’s cozy cafés, browse quaint shops, or stroll through leafy streets lined with Georgian facades. As the sun dips low, enjoy a hearty meal in a welcoming pub before retreating to your accommodations, ready for the adventures ahead.

If time allows, take a short detour to explore the lush grounds of Carton House Estate, once home to Irish nobility. Your final stage is a victory lap of sorts, guiding you past the historic 12th Lock and the storied 13th Lock as the city skyline slowly comes into view. The canal’s tranquil waters give way to the vibrant energy of Dublin, where your journey culminates at the poignant Famine Memorial.

From here, you’ll step inside the EPIC Museum of Irish Emigration (July 13), an award-winning interactive experience that brings to life the moving stories of Ireland’s diaspora. Next, tour the Jeanie Johnston Coffin Ship, a meticulously recreated vessel that offers a powerful glimpse into the journeys—and hardships—of those who left Ireland during the famine years.
