Xochimilco is famous for its vibrant floating gardens and trajineras, colorful gondola-like boats that tourists and locals use to navigate the canals. Historically, the area was used for agriculture, utilizing a system of chinampas—artificial islands built for growing crops. Today, Xochimilco is a popular destination for festive boat rides, where people enjoy music, food, and drinks as they float along the canals. It’s also home to unique wildlife, including the endangered axolotl, a type of salamander that has become a symbol of the region. Besides the canals, Xochimilco hosts traditional markets, historic churches, and cultural festivals, making it a vibrant place that blends ancient traditions with modern Mexican culture.

Casa Azul (The Blue House) is the former home of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, located in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City. Officially known as the Frida Kahlo Museum, it was where Kahlo was born, lived most of her life, and eventually died. The house, distinguished by its vivid blue walls, is now a museum dedicated to her life and work.

Frida Kahlo lived in Casa Azul with her husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera and the house preserves many of her personal belongings, artworks, and artifacts that offer insight into her life. The museum’s rooms display everything from her art materials and self-portraits to her dresses, including her famous Tehuana-style clothing, as well as the orthopedic devices she used due to her lifelong health problems.

Visitors can explore the studio where she painted, the gardens, and various rooms that showcase her deeply personal items. Casa Azul offers an intimate glimpse into Kahlo’s artistic process and her complex relationship with Mexican identity, feminism, and the physical and emotional pain she endured throughout her life.
