When most people think of Mexico, a few familiar images come to mind—sun-soaked beaches, margaritas, and maybe a vague notion of “it’s not safe.” But for travelers who look a little deeper, Mexico reveals itself as one of the most vibrant, complex, and beautiful destinations in the world. And yes—it’s easier to get to, more affordable, and far safer than you might think.
Over the course of just two weeks, we explored an extraordinary mix of history, culture, cuisine, natural beauty, and local life—from the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City to the Pacific coastline of Puerto Escondido, to the mountain towns of Oaxaca and the mystical butterfly sanctuaries near Zitácuaro. It’s a journey that feels like discovering a country that the rest of the world has already fallen in love with. (And we’re just catching up.)
Mexico City (CDMX): Ancient Roots in a Thriving Capital

CDMX is a city of paradoxes: ancient and modern, chaotic and serene, deeply traditional yet wildly creative. Built atop the ruins of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, its layered history tells the story of conquest, revolution, resilience, and reinvention.
We wandered leafy parks like Parque España, dined at Condesa’s famed restaurants like Lardo AND El Nido, and took in the energy of Lucha Libre, CDMX’ version of professional wrestling. But the most unforgettable moments came during a deep-dive walking tour through the historic center, where you can still see the outlines of Aztec temples, colonial churches, and the cultural scars of empire.
Mexico City is not just a city you visit—it’s a city you feel. And for all its massive size, one of the world’s 10 largest, it’s a welcoming and surprisingly easy destination for U.S. travelers.
Morelia, Pátzcuaro & Zitácuaro: The Soul of Michoacán

Traveling westward, we landed in Morelia—part of the renowned cradle of Mexican independence and home to the Conservatorio de las Rosas, the oldest music conservatory in the World. From there, we visited Pátzcuaro, a lakeside town where Día de los Muertos is celebrated with a depth of spirit and authenticity that gives you goosebumps.
In Zitácuaro, we witnessed one of nature’s greatest shows: the annual Monarch Butterfly Migration. Millions of butterflies arrive in a silent orange blizzard, covering the trees in the forests of Michoacán—a reminder that magic is real and alive in Mexico’s hidden corners.
Xochimilco & Coyoacán: Floating Through Time

Back in the southern reaches of CDMX’ vast city limits, Xochimilco’s canals offer a glimpse of the Aztec’s agricultural ingenuity. We skipped the party boats and instead explored by kayak, gliding through ancient waterways and chinampas—manmade farming islands still in use today. Nearby, Coyoacán brims with artistic soul, colorful markets, and the legacy of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. It’s a perfect place to slow down and soak up Mexico’s creative heartbeat.
Oaxaca & Monte Albán: Culinary Capital and Ancient Civilization

From the Pacific coast to the highlands, Oaxaca City and State are a feast for the senses. Its markets overflow with mole, mezcal, and handwoven textiles. It’s also home to Monte Albán, the stunning mountaintop ruins of the Zapotec civilization, which rival any ancient site worldwide in both scale and spirit.
Just outside the city, we hiked to Hierve el Agua, a petrified waterfall with natural pools perched high above the valley—a spot that feels like the edge of the earth.
Puerto Escondido: Laid-Back Paradise

Our final days were spent in Puerto Escondido, a beach town with soul. From the golden sands of Punta Zicatela to the turtle hatcheries and surf-shack cafes, it’s a haven for nature lovers, foodies, and anyone looking to unwind.
Why Mexico, Why Now?
What struck us most was how under-appreciated all of this still is—especially by American travelers. We met curious, respectful adventurers from France, Finland, and Austria who had come to experience Mexico not for clichés, but for its deep culture, rich history, and raw beauty.
It’s time we do the same. So is Mexico safe? Like anywhere, it depends on where you go and how you travel. But with the right guidance, a spirit of respect, and an open heart, Mexico will welcome you warmly, feed you gloriously, and leave you breathless in the best way possible.
Mexico isn’t just next door—it’s a whole other world waiting to be explored. It’s like going to Europe, without the Jet Lag!
Let us take you there
